FAQ

We know it’s old school, but we believe the best way to schedule an appointment is to talk to a human! Online forms often lack the nuance needed to figure out exactly how much time your car needs. By calling us, our front-office staff can ask the right questions, give you a more accurate estimate, and ensure we order the right parts before you arrive. It saves you time in the long run. Give us a ring—we promise we’re friendly.

In Ithaca, “All-Season” usually translates to “Three-Season.” Between the hills on Buffalo Street and the lake effect snow, we highly recommend dedicated winter tires. They are made of a softer rubber compound that stays flexible in freezing temps, giving you grip when all-seasons would turn into hockey pucks. If you want to make it up the hill in January, winter tires are your best friend.

We love our safe roads, but the salt is tough on metal. While modern cars have better rust-proofing than they used to, the best defense is a regular car wash—especially one that sprays the undercarriage. If you hear a sudden increase in exhaust noise (a loud rumble), bring it in; that’s usually the first place salt takes its toll. We check for structural rust every time your car is on the lift.

Absolutely. We have been the “semester mechanics” for generations of Cornell and Ithaca College students. We are happy to inspect a used car before you buy it, handle routine maintenance, or fix a breakdown. We can take your credit card over the phone and explain the repairs to you directly so you know your student—and their car—are in safe hands.

Don’t panic, but don’t ignore it. If the light is steady, it means something needs attention, but your car isn’t likely to explode. Fun fact: A loose gas cap is a common culprit! Try tightening it and driving for a day or two. If the light is flashing, however, that indicates a more serious misfire that could damage your engine. In that case, pull over and give us a call immediately.

Pothole season is a real fifth season here in Upstate NY. If your steering wheel is off-center when you’re driving straight, or if the car pulls to the left or right, your alignment is likely out. Ignoring it will chew up your tires incredibly fast (and tires are expensive!). If you hit a big one, stop by and let us check your suspension.

Probably not! That was the rule for your grandfather’s Buick. Most modern engines and synthetic oils are good for 5,000 to 7,500 miles (or more). However, because of our extreme temperature shifts and short trips up and down steep hills, your engine works harder than average. We can look at your manufacturer’s specs and your driving habits to create a schedule that saves you money without risking your engine.

We are a family-owned shop, and we plan on being here for a long time. The only way to do that is through trust. We will always differentiate between what is “critical safety maintenance” (do it now) and what is “recommended maintenance” (budget for it soon). If you don’t need it, we won’t sell it. We’d rather have you as a customer for 10 years than make a quick buck today.

We can certainly try! A “squeal” is often a belt or brake pad indicator. A “grind” is usually metal-on-metal (brakes or bearings). A “clunk” over bumps is usually suspension. But, sound travels in mysterious ways through a chassis. The best bet is to call us, describe the sound, and then bring it in so we can take it for a quick listen. We speak fluent “Car Noise.”

Read the manual! Seriously, following the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule is the secret to a car that hits 200,000 miles. But if you tossed the manual years ago, don’t worry. Just bring it in for regular oil changes. It allows us to get eyes on the vehicle regularly, spot small leaks before they become big floods, and keep your car running safely through the Ithaca winters.
