They are made of a softer rubber compound that stays flexible in freezing temps, giving you grip when all-seasons would turn into hockey pucks. If you want to make it up the hill in January, winter tires are your best friend.

While modern cars have better rust-proofing than they used to, the best defense is a regular car wash—especially one that sprays the undercarriage.
